How many kWh does a house use? The average U.S. home used 10,791 kWh of electricity in 2022, about 899 kWh a month or 29.6 kWh a day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This calculator shows how your own home compares. Enter the kWh from one bill with its number of days, or a full year’s total, and it shows kWh per day, per month and per year. It also shows how far your home sits from the U.S. average and where it falls among U.S. states. The tool runs in your browser, is free, needs no sign-up, and uploads nothing.

How to use the house kWh calculator

  1. Open the “I know” drop-down and choose either “The kWh on one bill” or “My kWh for a whole year”.
  2. If you chose one bill, find the kWh used (or “usage”) on your electricity bill and type it into “kWh on the bill”. Do not use the dollar amount.
  3. Enter the “Days in the billing period”. This is usually 28 to 31 for a monthly bill, or 60 or 61 for a two-month bill.
  4. If you chose a whole year, type your 12-month total into “kWh in a year”. Bills or your utility account will show it.
  5. Optional: enter your all-in price per kWh in “Price per kWh (optional)” to see cost per month and cost per year. Clear the box to hide the cost rows.
  6. Read the results: kWh per day, kWh per month, kWh per year, the comparison with the U.S. average, and where your home sits among U.S. states.
  7. Check any warning shown, then look at the two tables below the result.

The example buttons above the form fill in sample values, such as 900 kWh on a 30-day bill or the Louisiana and Hawaii yearly averages. Below the result, “How it was calculated” shows each step with your numbers. You can use Copy result, Copy link (the link stores every input so the calculation reopens later), or Print / save as PDF. How many kWh does a house use per month?

A typical U.S. home uses about 899 kWh a month, based on the 2022 average of 10,791 kWh a year. To find your own monthly figure, divide the kWh on your bill by the number of days in the billing period, then convert that daily figure to a monthly average.

The calculation uses three formulas:

  • kWh per day = kWh on the bill ÷ days in the billing period
  • kWh per month (average) = kWh per day × 365 ÷ 12
  • kWh per year = kWh per day × 365

For example, 900 kWh on a 30-day bill works out to 30 kWh a day. That is about 912.5 kWh a month and 10,950 kWh a year, which is 1.47 % above the 2022 U.S. average. The monthly figure is an average across the year. Your actual bills will rise and fall with the seasons, so one bill alone can look high or low.

What uses the most electricity in a home?

Air conditioning uses the largest share of residential electricity, at 19 %, according to the EIA’s 2020 survey. Space heating and water heating come next, at 12 % each. Lighting and refrigerators are the next two largest uses, but the EIA gives no percentages for them. The remaining 57 % covers everything else.

The tool’s split table applies these national shares to your total. It is a typical pattern, not a measurement of your home. Your own mix depends on climate, home size, heating fuel and how many people live there. A home with rooftop solar may also buy less from the utility than it uses, so its bill can understate real use.

Frequently asked questions

How many kWh does a house use per day?

The average U.S. home used about 29.6 kWh a day in 2022, based on the yearly total of 10,791 kWh. To find your own daily use, divide the kWh on a bill by the number of days it covers.

How many kWh does a house use per year?

The average U.S. home used 10,791 kWh in 2022. To find your own yearly total, add up 12 months of kWh from your bills or utility account, or multiply your kWh per day by 365.

Is 1,000 kWh a month a lot?

It is above average. 1,000 kWh a month is 12,000 kWh a year, about 11 % higher than the 2022 U.S. average of 10,791 kWh. Whether it is a lot for your home depends on its size, climate and how many people live there.

How do I find my kWh on my bill?

Look for a line labelled “kWh used” or “usage” on your electricity bill. The dollar amount is a separate number and is not what the calculator needs. The bill also shows the dates of the billing period, which tell you how many days to enter.

Which state uses the most electricity per home?

Louisiana had the highest average in 2022, at 14,774 kWh a year. Hawaii had the lowest, at 6,178 kWh a year. Utility purchases can understate real use where rooftop solar is common, so these figures are not a full picture of every home.

Why does the calculator show a warning?

A warning appears when the result is far from the typical range. A result above three times the U.S. average may mean the kWh or the days were entered wrongly, or that the bill covers more than one meter or building. A billing period under 10 days gives only a rough yearly figure, because weather and habits change over the year.
