MWh to kWh Conversion (Energy Unit Converter)

Enter an amount of energy and pick the units to convert between MWh, kWh and other energy units.

MWh to kWh conversion is a multiplication by 1,000: 1 MWh = 1,000 kWh. The MWh to kWh converter changes a value in megawatt-hours into kilowatt-hours, and it also works in reverse. Enter a number, choose MWh in the From box and kWh in the To box, and the result appears on the page. Because both units measure energy, the answer is an exact multiplication or division by 1,000, not a rough estimate.

The converter also handles Wh, GWh, TWh, joules, kilojoules, megajoules, gigajoules, BTU and kilocalories. It lists the amount in every unit in a table under the result. It runs in your browser, is free, and needs no sign-up. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use the MWh to kWh converter

  1. Type the number you want to convert into the Energy box.
  2. Open the From drop-down and choose megawatt-hour (MWh).
  3. Open the To drop-down and choose kilowatt-hour (kWh).
  4. Read the Result line. It shows the converted number with the unit you chose.
  5. Look at the table under the result to see the value in every unit, including joules, megajoules and BTU.
  6. To convert kWh to MWh instead, swap the two boxes: kWh in From and MWh in To. The same two boxes cover every other pair of units in the list, such as MWh to GJ or BTU to kWh.
  7. Open “How it was calculated” to see the formula and each step with your numbers. Negative numbers and decimals such as 0.75 also work, and commas in a long number such as 2,500 are accepted.

To try the tool quickly, press one of the example buttons above the form, such as “1 MWh to kWh” or “2,500 kWh to MWh”. Copy link saves every input in the page address, so the same calculation reopens later. Copy result gives you the result lines with a link. Print / save as PDF creates a copy with your inputs, results, steps and the date. Reset returns the tool to its starting example.

How do you convert MWh to kWh?

To convert MWh to kWh, multiply the number of megawatt-hours by 1,000. The prefixes explain why: “mega” means one million and “kilo” means one thousand, so 1 MWh = 1,000 kWh = 1,000,000 Wh.

For example, 250 MWh × 1,000 = 250,000 kWh. Multiplying by 1,000 moves the decimal point three places to the right, so 2.5 MWh becomes 2,500 kWh. The same rule applies to any value, large or small.

The calculator is exact because it converts through joules. One watt-hour equals 3,600 joules exactly, so 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ and 1 MWh = 3.6 GJ.

How do you convert kWh to MWh?

To convert kWh to MWh, divide the number of kilowatt-hours by 1,000. This is the reverse of the MWh to kWh rule, and it moves the decimal point three places to the left.

For example, 2,500 kWh ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 MWh. The same method works for the larger units. One GWh equals 1,000 MWh, or 1,000,000 kWh, and one TWh equals 1,000 GWh. So a value in TWh becomes kWh when you multiply it by 1,000,000,000.

The “How it was calculated” section shows each step with your numbers, so you can check the division yourself.

All of these energy units are fixed multiples of the joule. One watt-hour is 3,600 joules, because one watt for one hour is 1 J/s × 3,600 s. From that, 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ, 1 MWh = 3.6 GJ and 1 GWh = 3.6 TJ. A kilocalorie (International Table) is 4,186.8 J, which is 1.163 Wh. The converter keeps these relationships exact, apart from the BTU, whose joule value is given to seven digits by NIST.

Electricity meters and bills use kWh. Larger sites, utilities and power plants often report MWh or GWh, and fuel and heat figures are often given in MJ, GJ or BTU, so converting between them is a common step when comparing energy figures from different sources.

Some quick MWh to kWh values, by multiplying by 1,000: 0.001 MWh = 1 kWh, 0.5 MWh = 500 kWh, 1 MWh = 1,000 kWh, 10 MWh = 10,000 kWh and 100 MWh = 100,000 kWh.

Frequently asked questions

How many kWh in a megawatt hour?

There are 1,000 kWh in one megawatt-hour. This value is exact, because “mega” means one million and “kilo” means one thousand.

What is the difference between MW and MWh?

MW (megawatt) measures power, which is a rate. MWh (megawatt-hour) measures energy, which is power multiplied by time. This converter works with energy, so it converts MWh and kWh, not MW and kW.

How do you convert MWh to kWh by hand?

Multiply the MWh value by 1,000. For example, 0.75 MWh × 1,000 = 750 kWh. You can compare your answer with the converter’s result.

How do you convert kWh to MWh by hand?

Divide the kWh value by 1,000. For example, 40,000 kWh ÷ 1,000 = 40 MWh.

How many kWh are in a GWh?

There are 1,000,000 kWh in one gigawatt-hour (GWh), because 1 GWh = 1,000 MWh and 1 MWh = 1,000 kWh. Choose GWh in the From box and kWh in the To box to check any value.

How many MWh does an average U.S. home use in a year?

The average U.S. home used 10,791 kWh in 2022 (U.S. EIA), which is 10.791 MWh. Divide kWh by 1,000 to get MWh.

Can I use the results in a quote or report?

Yes. Results, numbers, charts and printouts may be used freely in commercial work such as quotes, proposals, reports and service records, and no attribution is needed.

Does the tool convert units other than MWh and kWh?

Yes. It converts between Wh, kWh, MWh, GWh, TWh, joules, kilojoules, megajoules, gigajoules, BTU (International Table) and kilocalories (International Table). For example, 12,000 BTU equals 3.517 kWh. BTU here is the International Table BTU, about 1,055.056 joules.
